TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iraqi political analyst said the expulsion of US forces from Iraq has become a growing demand among the Arab country’s people and politicians.

Speaking to IQNA, Mohammad Ali al-Hakim referred to a recent move by the Iraqi parliament to expel US forces from the county and described it as a historic step that is very important for maintaining Iraq’s independence and sovereignty.

“This was also a move to humiliate the colonizers, and on top of them the US,” he said.

He stressed that Iraqi people and politicians are against the presence of foreign forces in their country and that by insisting on staying in Iraq, the US will face a nightmare in Iraq like the one it did in Vietnam.

Earlier this month, Iraqi lawmakers unanimously approved a bill, demanding the withdrawal of all foreign military forces led by the United States from the country following the assassination of Iran’s top military commander, Lt. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, and the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

The legislators used an extraordinary parliamentary session to vote on a resolution requiring the government to press Washington and its allies to withdraw their troops from Iraq.

General Soleimani, al-Muhandis, and a number of their entourage were killed in a strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of January 3.

The White House and the Pentagon claimed responsibility for the assassination of General Soleimani in Iraq, saying the attack was carried out at the direction of US President Donald Trump.

Al-Hakim condemned the US assassination of the two commanders and said Trump will certainly regret authorizing this act of terrorism.

He also hailed Iran’s retaliation that came in the form of missile strikes against US bases in Iraq.

He went on to say that Martyr Soleimani was popular among all resistance forces and all freedom-seeking people in the world, adding that his blood will prove to be very dangerous for the US.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) targeted the US airbase of Ain al-Assad in Anbar province in western Iraq early on Wednesday.

“Tens of surface-to-surface missiles” were fired at the strategic airbase and the attack was later confirmed by the US officials.

The IRGC has called for a complete withdrawal of US troops from the Arab country, asserting that it would not differentiate between the US and Israel in retaliating against the assassination of the Iranian national hero.
